Wolfenstein: The New Order Review

Having finished the newly released Wolfenstein: The New Order (albeit a while ago), summed up below are my thoughts on the game itself. The game definitely lived up to its hype; it’s still the same old Nazi slaying game that was originally developed all those years ago. Having played Wolfenstein 2009, I went in with high hopes that the gameplay would resemble a similar experience to that of the new one, however it wasn’t case…it was much better than anticipated!

The gameplay overall for The New Order is quite spectacular which is largely attributed to the fact that it runs off the ID Tech 5 engine developed by ID Software — the same game engine used for R.A.G.E (another awesome game to play!). Its fast moving gameplay forces you to stay on your toes and keep alert of your surroundings, however you are still able to play sly and elect to go into a stealth style of play wherever possible during gameplay.

Story-wise, the game itself isn’t short, nor is it too long — it personally took me around 20 hours to complete in total. The story is highly engaging and pulls you in further during each chapter. The cutscenes were also brilliantly done along with the overall cinematic scenery and voiceovers of all characters.

The Good:
  • It’s a lot of fun
  • The gameplay offers you countless hours of shooting up Nazis in a violent fashion
  • Depending on what difficulty you choose, the replay value is definitely there with the higher settings being far more challenging
  • Storyline is intense and draws you at every turn
  • The weapon system/controls are simple to use and get used to
  • The weapons themselves are highly addictive, especially the laser and machine guns

The Bad:
  • Gameplay can get repetitive at times, but then again it is a corridor shooter
  • Whilst the perk system is great, it does feel a little shallow in regards to weapon upgrading (more could have been included here)
  • At times, it felt like the game was just a reskinned version of R.A.G.E, although the story and overall gameplay detracted from that feeling

Should you buy it?
Definitely. It’s an awesome shooter, especially if you’re devoted to FPS games. The story is addictive and makes you form a connection with the characters in the story, good or bad. The game definitely offers a high replay value with its difficulty settings, but also if you’re a bit of a completionist and want to achieve all perks and finish the game to 100%. The game is totally worth its value. Go play it!
